The L class were used mostly on the Gippsland line to Traralgon, electrified in the early-mid 1950's. Most the the classes work involved haulage of brown coal and briquettes from the Latrobe Valley to Melbourne. However, they were also used for passenger and other goods services. In 1987, there was a sudden withdrawl of all of the class, and many were scrapped not too long afterwards.
