The W class were used for shunting, primarily in the Melbourne area. All but two were on broad gauge. Their reliability was perhaps not as great as for some other classes, and this may be the reason why most of the class were scrapped. W266 was a demonstrator unit for the class, originally being numbered 7101 by the SRA.
W266 and 267 were on standard gauge.

Both W241 and W244 have been leased recently by the T413 group to the West Coast Railway as shunters; with the latter set to be repainted in the WCR livery.
